Tillward Age Verification

Ask a buyer’s age before restricted products go through.

A gate on your storefront asks a yes or no, a birth year, a date of birth or a ticked box, whichever you choose. At checkout, age-restricted products stay blocked until the buyer has passed it. Each check is logged for you to export.

Sample data. These are the Display targeting rules of one sample store. A single minimum age and method cover every rule.

Four ways to ask

You choose one method for the whole store. The default is date of birth. Whichever you choose, the pass is what the buyer answered.

  1. Yes / no prompt

Two buttons. A click on Yes passes. The buyer is not asked an age, and nothing is compared with your minimum age.

Buyer seesYes, I am of legal age

  2. Birth year

The buyer types a year. The current year minus that year must reach your minimum age. The month and day are not looked at, so a buyer turning 18 later this year counts as 18 today.

    Buyer seesEnter your birth year

  3. Date of birth

The buyer enters a full date. The exact age on today’s date must reach your minimum age. A date that is too recent shows an error and the buyer can type again.

Buyer seesEnter your date of birth

  4. Checkbox

One box and an Enter button. Enter does nothing until the box is ticked.

Buyer seesI confirm I am of legal age

Set the minimum age to any whole number from 1 to 120. Change the wording, fonts and colors, pick a centered, full screen or bottom sheet layout, or start from the Light, Dark or Branded preset. Choose how long a pass is remembered in that browser (720 hours unless you change it) and where a buyer who declines goes.

Set up the age gate

Where the gate holds

The gate shows on your storefront and the pass travels with the cart. At checkout, a Shopify Function looks for it. A buyer without a pass sees “You must be 18 or older to purchase age-restricted items. Please verify your age to continue.” (your own minimum age replaces 18) and cannot continue.

  2. CartCarries the pass

The gate is a theme app embed you switch on in the theme editor. There is no theme code to edit. Until the embed is on, the gate does not appear.

The same gate, asking for a year. The wording here is the built-in English default. Any text you type replaces it, in every language of your store.

A record of every check

The Audit log lists each gate answer and each order placed from a passed cart. Filter it by result, source, country or order, and export the rows you see as CSV.

Storefront gate
A gate answer reached the app, with the result the browser sent.
Order
An order was placed from a cart that carried the pass.
Pass
The buyer’s own answer was enough: a click on Yes, a year or date old enough, or a ticked box.
Fail
The buyer clicked No or Exit, or pressed Escape. A date that is too recent is not a fail, because the buyer can try again.
Threshold
The minimum age in your settings at the moment the answer arrived.

A row records that an answer arrived. It is not proof of age. The app does not check ID, so a pass is what the buyer said.

From install to a live gate

  1. Install from the Shopify App Store

The app opens in your Shopify admin on its Home page, with a setup guide. A new install starts with the gate off.

  2. Turn on the gate and the embed

One button switches the gate on with a minimum age of 18 and the date-of-birth method. A second switch, in the theme editor, turns on the app embed. Not sure which age? Two questions give a starting suggestion, which you can change.

  3. Add a display rule

A Whole store rule covers every product. Collection, product and tag rules cover only those. The checkout check blocks the products your rules cover, so add at least one rule.

Worth knowing

No ID check
A pass is the buyer’s own declaration. The app does not check ID and calls no other service to confirm an age. If you sell somewhere that requires a checked ID, you need an ID-verification provider alongside it.
Checkout
The checkout check blocks only the products your display rules cover. With no rules, it blocks nothing.
Theme embed
The gate needs the app embed on in your published theme. The status banner on Home says whether it is.
Raising the age
Raise the minimum age and earlier passes at a lower age stop counting. Those buyers meet the gate again.

This page describes product features. It is not legal advice. Which minimum age applies to your products and markets is for you to confirm.

Two switches and a rule

Turn on the gate, turn on the theme embed, add a display rule. The setup guide in the app and the guides here go through each.
