Tillward Order Limits

Set the most, the least and the multiples a buyer can order.

Cap quantity, order value and weight per order, and what one customer, a customer group or the whole store can buy over a day, a month or a lifetime. Each limit shows on your storefront and runs again inside Shopify checkout.

Six ways to limit an order

Each limit is a rule. A rule says which products, which customers and how much. Free allows one rule, of the first two kinds. Pro removes the cap and adds the rest.

  1. Quantity per order

    Free

A minimum, a maximum, a multiple, or an exact list of allowed quantities such as packs of 6, 12 and 24. Count across the cart, or per product, per variant or per collection.

    ReadsMin 6, multiples of 6

  2. Order value and weight

    Free

A minimum or maximum order value in your shop currency, or a cap on cart weight in grams, kilograms, ounces or pounds. These are checked in checkout.

    Reads250.00 USD minimum

  3. Per customer over time

    Pro

Cap units, amount spent, number of orders or weight for one customer over a day, a week, a month, a year, a rolling window you size, or a lifetime. You choose which orders count.

ReadsMax 2 per customer per month

  4. Whole store or a customer group

    Pro

One shared pool for everyone, or one pool for every customer with a tag. Fits a drop of 300 pieces that must not sell past 300.

ReadsMax 300 for the whole store in total

  5. Cooldown between purchases

    Pro

Make a customer wait hours, days, weeks or months before they can buy the same item again.

    Reads30-day cooldown

  6. New and returning customers

    Pro

One cap for a first order and a different one for buyers who have ordered before.

    Reads2 for new customers

Aim any limit at all products, a collection, single variants, or products that match a tag, vendor, type or price. Narrow it by customer, country, sales channel and dates. Scheduling is on every plan. Templates start you from Black Friday, limited drops or case packs.

Conditions and targeting

Watch a limit hold

A drop allows 2 hoodies per customer. A buyer adds a third. This is what the buyer meets at each step, and what you see afterwards.

  1. Product pageShows the limit
  2. CartBlocks or adjusts the quantity
  3. CheckoutStops the order

The storefront message is an app embed you switch on in the theme editor. There is no theme code to edit. With the embed off, checkout still enforces the rule.

Reduce to 2

If the buyer skips the cart and goes straight to checkout, Shopify Functions stop the order with the same message and a button that fixes the quantity.

What you see afterwards

Home and Analytics report what each limit did over the last 7, 30 or 90 days. These are the words the admin uses.

Blocked
A buyer tried to go over a limit and the app stopped them.
Shown
A limit message was shown to a buyer without stopping anything.
Adjusted
The app corrected the quantity instead of blocking: a minimum filled in, or a quantity lowered.
Came back and ordered
A blocked cart that turned up on a paid order within 7 days.
Walked away
A blocked cart that did not come back and order within 7 days.

The admin says where it cannot count. A block inside Shopify checkout is not counted, because checkout does not report back. Order-value rules are marked Checkout only, and the value of blocked carts is a direction, never revenue.

Rules doing the work

Manage rules

5 active rules, 2 with measurable windows: 112 buyers at a cap right now, 9 close to one.

Window usage needs a window: per-order rules have none, cooldown and lifecycle rules pause between purchases, and order-value rules enforce inside checkout, where nothing can be counted. Every one of these rules is still enforcing.

From install to a live limit

  1. Install from the Shopify App Store

The app opens in your Shopify admin on its Home page, with a short setup guide. Paid plans are billed on your Shopify invoice.

  2. Set the rule

Start from a template or a blank rule. Name it, pick the products, set the number and switch it to Active. A line under the form reads the rule back in words before you save.

  3. Shopify runs it

Switch on the app embed in the theme editor. Changes reach your store within about a minute, and checkout enforces the rule as a Shopify Function.

Worth knowing

Checkout
Shopify checkout cannot report back. A block there is not counted in the admin, and the rule still stops the order.
Value and weight
Order-value and weight limits are checked in checkout only, so they show no storefront counts.
Shopify POS
POS cannot refuse a sale. A rule that applies in store reports the sales that go over it.
Bundles
Fixed bundles can count each item inside. Mix-and-match bundles count as one.

The first limit takes about four minutes

The setup guide in the app has four steps, three of them required. Read it first if you like.
