Tillward Payment Rules

Choose which payment methods your buyers see.

Write a rule that hides, moves or renames a payment method at Shopify checkout, depending on the cart, the customer and where the order ships. Rules run inside checkout as a payment customization. The app can also hide the express checkout buttons on your storefront.

Sample data. Three rules as they read in the Payment Rules list.

What a rule can do

A rule is a set of conditions and one or more actions on a payment method. You name the method in plain text, such as Cash on Delivery, and the rule finds it in the list.

  1. Hide a payment method

Take a method off the list for the carts a rule matches. A hide can apply to all checkouts, to the express area only, or to the regular payment form only.

    ReadsHide Cash on Delivery

  2. Move a method up or down

Put a method at the top or at the bottom of the list, for example a local method first in one market.

ReadsMove Cash on Delivery to the Top

  3. Rename a method

Change the label the buyer sees. The payment method itself is unchanged.

ReadsRename Bank deposit to Pay by transfer

  4. Hide the express buttons

An app embed hides the Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons on product pages and on the cart page. Shopify draws them in a closed container, so the embed hides all of them on a page or none.

ReadsHide on product pages and the cart page

  5. Hold a B2B order for review

Keep an order from a company buyer on hold until you have looked at it, with a short reason. This takes effect on B2B checkouts on Shopify Plus.

ReadsReview orders from new B2B customers

  6. Set payment terms on a B2B order

Apply Net 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90, a fixed due date, or terms that start on an event such as an invoice being sent, with an optional deposit. Or remove terms so the order is paid in full. This takes effect on B2B checkouts on Shopify Plus.

Watch a rule work

A rule hides Cash on Delivery on carts over 500.00 USD. A buyer with a 620.00 USD cart reaches the payment step.

  3. CheckoutHides, moves, renames

The express buttons are controlled by an app embed you switch on in the theme editor, under App embeds. Rules need no theme change.

Rule priority. Rules run by priority, top to bottom. Every matching rule applies. When two rules move or rename the same method, the higher one wins, and a hide beats both. Reorder from each row’s actions menu.

One line per rule: its priority, when it runs and its effect at checkout. Rules run by priority, lower numbers first, and you can reorder, pause and duplicate them from the list.

Shopify runs the rule as a payment customization. The buyer sees the methods the rule leaves, with no sign that one was hidden.

What a rule can look at

Every rule has at least one condition. With several, you choose whether all of them must hold or any one is enough.

  1. Cart

The cart subtotal and total, the item count, and whether a discount is applied.

ReadsCart · Subtotal, Greater than, 500

  2. Product

The lines in the cart: product, variant, collection, tag, vendor, type, SKU, quantity and weight.

ReadsProduct · Tag, Contains any of, high-risk

  3. Customer

Whether the buyer is signed in, how many orders they have placed, and their tags.

ReadsCustomer · Order count, Equals, 0

  4. Shipping

Country, province and ZIP, whether the address is a PO box, the delivery option the buyer chose, and whether the order ships or is picked up.

ReadsShipping · Country code, Not in, US

  5. Market

The Shopify market the buyer is in, picked from your own markets.

ReadsMarket · Market handle, In, de

  6. B2B

Whether the buyer is purchasing for a company, and which company or location.

    ReadsB2B · Is B2B, Equals, Yes

Shopify limits how much data one payment customization may ask for, so one rule can use conditions from at most two of three families: product, customer, and shipping with market and B2B. Cart conditions go with anything. The editor says so before you save. A checkout simulator beside the form reruns on six sample carts as you edit.

Worth knowing

Wallets
Shopify may ignore a rename or a move aimed at Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or Klarna. The editor warns you when a rule targets one. This is Shopify’s behavior and it can change.
Shopify Plus
Hiding a method in the express area and both B2B actions take effect only on Plus. In the U.S. and Canada, hiding the credit card needs Plus too.
Sample carts
The checkout simulator uses sample carts with no products, so a rule built on product conditions can only be tested at a real checkout.
Express buttons
The embed hides all the express buttons on a page or none. Hiding them can lower conversion, so test it before you leave it on.

Start with one rule

Open a template, change the amount and the payment method, and check it in the simulator. Saving publishes the rule. Then look at a real checkout, because the simulator runs on sample data.
